Emily Henkels - Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Emily Henkels grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia.

Her love for horses inspired an early interest in veterinary medicine, which she carried with her to Penn State University, where she was a member of the equestrian team. After college, she worked as a barn manager at a private equine facility and then as a veterinary technician in her hometown. During that time, she completed a technician externship at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, where she fell in love with San Diego and knew she’d eventually make her way back. She went on to earn her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California. Now thrilled to be back in San Diego, Dr. Henkels is proud to be part of the Coastal Animal Hospital team. She's especially passionate about surgery and senior pet care, and finds deep fulfillment in building relationships with pet parents and helping their animals enjoy every stage of life.

When she’s not at the clinic, you’ll likely find her horseback riding, running, camping, trying new recipes in the kitchen, attempting to get back into playing saxophone (sorry neighbors), or relaxing with her senior dog, Gracie.
